PAX West Preview: Summoner’s Fate

So I’ve played some card based games before, and I’m sure you have too. But this one is also on iOS, so you can bounce between playing on the go, and playing at home. Summoner’s Fate combines both RTS and deck building in a really nice way that felt really great and enjoyable to play. It’s made by D20 Studios, and I really enjoyed checking this out at PAX West this year.

When you take two types of games and combine them, I tend to get hesitant because how well can you do both together? Summoner’s Fate does both, and does them well. The deck building compliments the top down turn-based strategy based. What’s also neat is that you don’t have to rely on the deck building aspect either. While in many cases it will help you progress through the game, in many of the encounters I faced I held onto my cards and didn’t use them as they might have (and did) help me later in the game with other bosses.

The gameplay feels very smooth and well paced, and everything goes along nicely. In the demo I played at PAX, the only time I felt like the game got drawn out was at the boss battle, because the boss could continually spawn additional enemies which I had to keep trying to defeat while whittling down the bosses health and defending myself from the spawned enemies.

What I’m most excited about is to be able to take the game with me on the go. Having the ability to play it on my PC when I’m home but then bounce to my phone makes any game instantly more appealing, as I find myself out and about more often, but still wanting to have a full gameplay experience. I definitely think this is a game worth keeping your eye on if you like any type of card based games or any sort of turn based strategy games. Even more-so if you’re a fan of playing games on the go.
